Services

Monty’s Corner is committed to bring you a range of online services to help you and your child to cope with different emotions and feelings (hopefully) easy while going through the lengthy treatments. We say “easy” but actually we know by experience that it is not an easy journey at all. It is a roller coaster ride with lots of ups and downs. There will be good days and there will be bad days.

Read philosophy behind Monty’s Corner to find out the concepts of our foundation. It is all about coping during the difficult times.

Monty’s Corner is here to support you when you need it. Remember that all our services are free to use.

Services for Children and Teens

Competitions

To keep children busy with activities they like. To take their minds away from the day-to-day medical talks.

Colouring Sheets

Younger children like colouring.

Dream Corner

This activity is created like a game mainly for teens. There will be times when your child will see no future ahead because of the long-lasting, almost never-ending treatments. As a parent, you don’t really know whether this is because of their medical condition or just normal teenage growing pains. This activity is designed to help them to create a compelling future for themselves. Something to look forward to… Something to hang on to… (this activity is currently inactive. Apologies)

Between you and me

There will be times your child will wander off in their thoughts. You don’t know what is going in their minds. Sometimes they have anxiety and fear but they cannot tell you because they don’t want worry you.

This service allows them to speak to someone (a professional on our side) they don’t know. Sometimes it feels better to talk a stranger than some one they know.

Your child can send a private message here. As a parent, you can feel safe we are no strangers.

Every message is replied. If you wish to receive a copy of the messaging, please let us know.

“White Cell Power” game

This is a wonderful game for all ages. It powers up everybody. It is used based on the concept of visualisation techniques for adults going through radiotherapy. Playing this game before the treatments, we believe that your child will be thinking of how he/she beat the cancer cells, which is a powerful feeling.

Twitter

Many parents feel under pressure to keep their child “positive” all the time. But the truth is no one can be positive all the time. It is natural to feel low or upset or have negative thoughts. Twitter is there to enable particularly the teenager to express their feeling and shout about them. Some teens bottle up and don’t talk in order not to upset their parents. Twitter helps them to shout loud that every one can see how much of this really sucks.

Of course, parents can use twitter on behalf of their children.

Services for Parents

World News

We are aggregating news around the world specifically on the childhood cancers.

Childhood Cancer Information Sites (Coming soon)

Many parents told us that they did not understand the content presented on some sites. So, we examine sites before we recommend it. We look for quality and easy-to-understand information.

Personal Space

This is your space if you wish to use. Some people like to be themselves and not to talk to anybody about what is going on in their minds, or sometimes don’t get the opportunity to talk, or cannot find a person to talk, who may understand. Psychologists say “talk about it” or “write about it”. If you are the writing person, then you are welcome to use this space.

Connecting Child’s Journey

This space is great when connecting with family and friends. You can keep a journal of your child’s medical progress here and everyone can see it.

Another big benefit to that is that some parents cannot find a similar case in their local area so it would help them to find information on similar cases and perhaps contact (with permission) to share information.

Recommendations

We welcome recommendations from parents who tried things and found out useful particularly during the long hospital stays or home stays. We welcome recommendations.

Remember that Monty’s Corner is serving people worldwide and one little thing may have a big impact on some one else’s life on the other side of the planet.

Research Information

This is an online book giving information about what has been studied and research in the academic community into the causes of childhood cancers. It contains also interesting theories behind the cancer causes on children.

CCE Research Alliance, our sponsor, supports epidemiological academic studies into the causes of childhood cancers. With their work, they hope to prove or disprove some or all of these theories in time.

WHY?

Why in my brain?
It caused me so much pain.
Why in my head?
Perhaps somewhere else instead.
Why in my brain?
We tried a fluid drain.

I just want to walk like you.
I’ve had enough now, haven’t you too?

Poem from Sophie Pollock who lost her battle with cancer in 2007.

Things you can do on Difficult Days

Talk about the child who has died.
Write a letter to him/her.
Eat his/her favourite food.
Watch a video of him/her.
Wear one of his/her clothes like a scarf.
Light a candle.
Look at photos.
Listen to his/her favourite music.
Visit the grave.
Cry, laugh, scream.
Release a balloon with a message.

Some tips for parents and siblings.

What’s the Point?

What’s the point of eyes,
If you’re not here to see?
What’s the point of ears,
If you cannot hear me?
Every sense on my body,
Useless as a broken toy,
What’s the point of beauty,
If you cannot enjoy?
